What you have to decide "before" you play the "game" is what constitutes
winning. If you expect to win the "war" as the axis player then you can
expect to be disappointed. Players with this expectation probably have a
higher dropout rate than all others.
If you use the game as a vehicle to learn somthing about what drove the
dynamics of the war, then you will probably stick it out to the bitter end.
I "think" I would place myself in this catagory.
Personally, I like to play two games back to back same options each player
plays opposite sides. That way each side experiences both the defensive and
offensive sides of the game at the same time.
Sometimes, however, players just want to experiment with a weird combination
of options to see how that influences the game play and have no expectation
of playing to the bitter end, but rather are just looking for the tipping
points. They are not exactly playing a scenario, but both go in knowing
that the game will not be played to 6/45.
