Hi All,
can someone pls explain how to send a test email & how to change
root users email address.

You don't want to change the root email address, you want to modify
sendmail's alias file so that email for root is forwarded to another
(monitored) mailbox. I really recommend "Essential System
Administration" By AEleen Frisch and it is partially available on line
with google books. This alias topic is addressed on page 526.
