Thanks for the suggestions.  It's nice to have references to specific

I bought a USB enclosure + laptop drive a while ago for another
purpose, but I was never able to get my Linux server to see them.
Works fine on a Windows box and the Freecom 3.5" USB enclosure works
fine on the Linux box so it's not a general external USB disk problem.
Never got to the bottom of it...

The other issues are the relative expense of laptop drives and the
fact that I really do need at least 500GB - I have my large (and still
expanding) CD collection ripped to FLAC for streaming to my
Squeezebox.  Otherwise I'd love to be able to use a laptop drive, both
from the point of view of size and being able to power it from USB.
