Now, I find your comment about not buying online intriguing. But
doesn't shopping in the highstreet cut down your choice of monitors
plus which isn't it normally cheaper online?

The only reason I would not want to buy an LCD screen online is that there
is a significant difference in appearance between different types. Using
one of the dreaded big name high street stores that I usually avoid like
the plague, at least gives you an opportunity to compare. Of course, you
could use the showrooms, then still buy online.

If you are able to find somewhere that will let you see the one you are
buying powered up, it's worth paying a premium IMHO so that you could
reject a screen with dead pixels. This may not be important to you; it
would annoy the hell out of me!

I've taken your comments about screen resolution into advice, and I'm
now looking at maybe getting a 22" screen. The Dell SP2208WFP is my
current favourite. It's a wide screen with a built in webcam.

Dell certainly have a good reputation for their screens. I have a Dell LCD
17" that dates from 2001. It is still in regular use at the desk where I
test newly-built and repaired machines.

For what it's worth, I just upgraded from a 19" lcd to a 24" lcd (Samsung syncmaster 2493hm) from Play.com. Not sure how they'd deal with a dead pixel issue but for choice they win hands down. Worth having a look.
