Amazing how far some academics can get out of touch with the real world. 
There are already moderated newsgroups, list services and web forums for 
maths, physics and biology - and places where you can pay if you want to 
be a member of an elite club. Abusing googles free groups service to do 
this is probably against their T&Cs anyway.
