I have just moved my PC from one room to another at home. Now, when I
insert a CD into the optical drive, my PC reboots without warning and
without displaying any error messages. I have tried using different
CDs, of types CD-R and CD-RW.
Apart from physically relocating my PC (very carefully) I have not
installed any new software or made any configuration changes.
I have performed a full security scan (anti-virus, spyware, port-
probe, etc.) – all clear. I have also performed a System Restore to a
stable date.
The same thing keeps happening.
Any suggestions please?

Very likely a hardware problem; loose wire, electrical contact
disturbed, drive mechanism otherwise faulty.
Here's the process I'd go through;
1. Look in the system error log.
2. Look at the drive under Device Manager; reinstall drivers.
3. Inspect it with a system analyser program, such as SiSoft or PC
Wizard.
4. Open case and check all wiring; power cable, IDE cable.
5. Replace drive.
Retrying a CD after each stage.

Hi Ed
I've run various analyzers and no problems were reported. I have also
checked the wiring and cannot see anything amiss.
What I have noticed was that my PC is running a little warmer since
the move, I've even had a couple of temperature alerts, possibly due
to different ventilation ina different room. I opened the case and
checked all the fans, which are operating normally. Since turning up
the fan speeds to max I have managed to get access to a few CDs again,
albeit only browsing and running a couple of programs off the CD
quickly.
My CPU was reporting around 60 degrees Celsius but now it's dropped to
a more healthy 44 degrees.
The motherboard is at 31 degrees.
Is it possible that an increase in heat could cause such reboots?

Yes. It looks as though you've found the cause there. That happens a lot
when a fan fails; the system dies and just reboots.
My CPU is currently 44º; mainboard 32º. No problems.
It seems to me to be quite a radical shift in external ventilation to
have caused that dramatic increase. Do you have any real reasons to
support that? The sun's not shining through a window straight onto the
box, is it?
I'm wondering if the cpu-fan is simply jamming occasionally. That seems
more likely. Build up of dust, bearings going.
