Disk images are dandy, in theory, IFF you can replicate the
motherboard, CPU, etc. on the machine you are trying to recover to -
often you can't though.
That's not that difficult to fix IMHO, I've recovered images to
different hardware plenty of times with XP and 2000 (not had the
misfortune to have to use Vista in anger yet). It just takes a little
thought and some knowledge which is easily found if you can use Google
and know what to ask. Of course, if you image with no compression you
may also be able to mount the image as a virtual machine on the new
hardware and extract your files from that.
