Hi,
I have a local charity that has a £150 inc budget for upgrading the
finance officer's machine.
I've been looking to just buy a complete (less OS- the old machine has
a full retail XP licence that will transfer) system box - but most
seem to come with optical writers and bigger hard disk than needed. 40
GB would be loads enough.
I've also been looking at new components instead - but it would need a
replacement processor, hsf, mobo, ram, graphics, memory, hard disk,
sata data cable and power supply.
Graphics performance is unimportant - but she runs lots of
applications concurrently, so a couple of gigs of memory looks to be
justified.
I just wondered if anyone had the time to suggest what they would go
for, if they had been asked. It really needs to be something with a
year's warranty (or more) - as getting this money approved was hard
enough (to be spent on the bean-counter) and "It blew up, can I have
another £150?" wouldn't go down too well.

Used/refurbished? You could have two of these and some change:
Search Ebay for item 260293634486. They regularly sell stuff like this.
I like the idea of buying two and keeping the second as a spare!
However, I doubt if the charity trustees will appreciate why two were
purchased, when only one was "needed" (or authorised).
