I don't know if NEC are still one of the best brands (apart from
Plextor) but they used to have a better reputation than most and my
first drive, an NEC was definitely more reliable than any I've had
since. That could be because of the speeds though: these days I
generally have to limit the burning speed if I want discs that will work
reliably in DVD players and laptop DVD-ROMs (which seem more fussy than
full size drives IME).
