Along with the other ideas in this thread, make sure that you don't
have a hardware/driver module problem. The Dell Inspiron 9400 I use
here had a bug with the network card driver b44 (see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/279102 and its duplicates). The
problem usually reared its head during heavy loads and the network
connection would drop for a number of seconds.

/var/log/daemon and dmesg output should give you more information
about what is going on with your laptop.
