Hello,
Maybe I am shooting in the dark here, but I would check sequence points
for dbus in runlevel directories.
Here (Hardy 8.04) I have:
/etc/rc1.d/K88dbus
/etc/rc2.d/S12dbus
/etc/rc3.d/S12dbus
/etc/rc4.d/S12dbus
/etc/rc5.d/S12dbus
