Seriously though... it sounds (no pun intended) as if you have other
issues with the system. I'd still check your /var/log files to see if
you can determine what else is borked.

I checked var log but it is no help for me at least since I can't understand most of what I read yet. Anyway everything I need seems to be working so I will use the computer as it is and continue to study to understand it better.
