On Ubuntu Feisty with KDE my system sometimes becomes unstable and
jerky. When this happens I clip over to a console and see this:

What is causing that? How do I fix it?
Note that upgrading to Gutsy on my hardware is impossible, as per the
7.10 release notes. Yes, I tried anyway, and no, it didn't work
(crappy ATI video card).
