IIRC (AITID*), the -desktop packages aren't necessary except to pull in
all the things that are the defaults for (X, K)Ubuntu.  You can get
along well without them after installation of your system and need to
if you are going to strip out the extras and burn a new installation CD.

*  OK, I just made that one up.  It means, "and I think I do."
