Maybe one option is to configure F-Spot to handle the import when you just plug you camera in... Where do I configure which program handle the event?

Yes. See this bug:

Upshot: don't use gthumb to import your photos. You might be able to
recode them with imagemagick or something else to get f-spot to read
them...
