Thank you all for your friendly help and advice. I overcame the problem
by first reloading Ubuntu just to be sure there were no hardware
problems. Then, acting on advice from my son, I opened a terminal and
entered:- sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
Then proceeded with the win2k set up disc. All went well and the machine
is now in its final set up stages.
