dapper upgrade

Get this message on dist-upgrade <Breezy to Dapper>

E: Invalid operation dist-update
root@ava:/var/lib/dpkg# apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Problem parsing dependency Depends
E: Error occurred while processing gnome-volume-manager (NewVersion1)
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Any idea how to fix??
