But how do I locate /dev/sdb from this:

$ cat /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
md2 : active raid1 dm-12[1] dm-11[0]
      69167744 blocks [2/2] [UU]

md0 : active raid1 dm-7[1] dm-6[0]
      71127680 blocks [2/2] [UU]

md1 : active raid1 sdd1[0] sda1[1]
      979840 blocks [2/2] [UU]

I'd try a "pvscan" next.

If that doesn't tell you, and if this is Hoary, ....

Does this mean that those "crazy" devices is a Hoary-only issue?

It seems /proc/mdstat contains "normal" devices if I do the same install with Breezy
