the ubuntu liveCD [1] supports as many hardware as the install CD (in
fact they are the same codebase and i doubt that knoppix supports more
hardware here) and comes with kernel 2.6 by default.
its not easy to remaster a liveCD, but look at the wiki page [2], its
also not _this_ hard :)
