I've got Ubuntu running on a Toshiba 430 CDS (Pentium 120 MHz, 48 Mb
RAM, 1.28 Gb HDD). If your laptop is that old you should do a custom
install and follow this mini-RAM howto :

Instead of icewm I recommend xfce4, gdm for xdm, and for Hoary you need
xserver-xorg instead of xserver-xfree86.

Your laptop is definitely not win98/2000 only, but you might have to
google a bit to get it to work the way you want !
