Well, I posted an answer in another newsgroup already.
If you are going to ask the same question in more than one newsgroup,
you should cross-post them; that is, post the question to all of the
newsgroups at the same time. That way, answers to one thread will show
up in another, and you only have to check one to find out if there are
any updates.

Hi Christopher, and many thanks for your thorough reply in the
alt.sci.math.combinatorics group. I only read your reply through Google
Groups, it hasn't yet appeared on my ISP's news server! That is why my
replies appear delayed/missing. I tried cross-posting but for some
reason the messages never appeared to any of the groups! So I had to
post separate messages to each group. It seems my news server is not
behaving as it should with the less popular groups (a.s.m.c and s.m.r).
It's very frustrating having to check Google for replies and not being
able to reply to them...
Regarding my question, your answer is spot on. Another poster in
sci.math.research replied with one of the sequences in Sloanne's site.
Based on what I read so far, it appears to be an open problem (no
general formula has been found yet). Of the sequences you posted, the
following two appear to be what I'm looking for:
http://www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/A066037
www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/A003042">http://www.research.att.com/~njas/sequences/A003042
I managed to find the second paper (Harary et al., 1988) online and
quickly browsed through it - seems to contain a wealth of information on
the subject. About the second paper (Douglas, 1977), unfortunately I
don't have access to a university account now (I used to, but that was a
few years ago), so can't use ScienceDirect.
Again, thanks to all who replied and sorry for the multiple posts!

Costas
