To one who is frustrated and depressed,it may not be important to
accurately mark time.Inside he was callous,neglecting subjects outside
maths of his passion. Also he may have wanted to make out a neat
letter,preferrring to not smudge with corrections before giving to
authority figures, (this was just before the colonial 'mutiny').. not
wrongly covering his age as "about 23 years".Or he may have saved
trouble of  preparing letters of no consequence again or even cost of
re-typing.
