Where did this idiom come from? I heard it just yesterday, and used inaccurately. The idea is that one side controls the other like a slaveowner owns his slave. It's not about defeating them, but about controlling them. The one follows the other, but that should be all that's meant. I think it's been used in sports for a decade or more, where inaccuracies aren't as important afaic. If you are inclined to email me for some reason, remove NOPSAM :-) |
