"Stein" can mean rock, and so there are several mountains or mountain 
ranges whose name ends with "-stein": Wendelstein, Dachstein, Wetterstein.
Especially rocks with a castle on top lend such names to the castles (and 
thus possibly also to the noble family formerly owning them): 
Neuschwanstein, Giebichenstein, Kriebstein, Ehrenbreitstein, Liebenstein.

Hence, there is a connexion, albeit not one that would answer all the OP's 
questions.
