"Stein" can mean rock, and so there are several mountains or mountain
ranges whose name ends with "-stein": Wendelstein, Dachstein, Wetterstein.
Especially rocks with a castle on top lend such names to the castles (and
thus possibly also to the noble family formerly owning them):
Neuschwanstein, Giebichenstein, Kriebstein, Ehrenbreitstein, Liebenstein.
Hence, there is a connexion, albeit not one that would answer all the OP's
questions.
