1: The scam artists depend on the needs of the scammed, and prey on
those needs. The immorality of it all doesn't enter into the scammers
mind.

2: As far as blaming others when the con artist gets caught out, it's
not uncommon. Think cults ,and I'm not just suggesting our own local
one, this is a common occurrence, and there are plenty of people who
today blame the media for Bob Bakker, and a bunch of others, for
instance, but I've experienced this myself.

There's also a common behaviour to maintain the world view for the
conned. It goes along the line of "Well, when I was buying into it, it
was genuine, but it all went wrong" (usually followed by  "after I got
out").
