Survival comes first. Eco comes in a distant second.
We have to survive in order to reshape our technology to accomodate the
ecology. The problem is, the current system of government in the West
(capitalism), does not place a high enough value on ecology and sustainable
technologies.
This is the REAL problem that we face. All other problems fall into line
once this issue has been addressed.
The current president appears to be consolidating his power in such a way
that addressing the vagaries of capitalism could be accomplished in the name
of national security - the US Constitution be damned. I am not a Bush
cheering section, so forget about attacking me on that basis. Sometimes
people do the right things for the wrong reasons. And, no, I'm not saying
that everything he does is right. Far from it, actually.
