Micah 6:8
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of
you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Amos 5:24
But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing
stream!
Leviticus Chapter 19:
13 " 'Do not defraud your neighbor or rob him.
" 'Do not hold back the wages of a hired man overnight.
14 " 'Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind,
but fear your God. I am the LORD.
15 " 'Do not pervert justice; do not show partiality to the poor or
favoritism to the great, but judge your neighbor fairly.
16 " 'Do not go about spreading slander among your people.
" 'Do not do anything that endangers your neighbor's life. I am the
LORD.
17 " 'Do not hate your brother in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor frankly
so you will not share in his guilt.
18 " 'Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but
love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.
Deuteronomy Chapter 15
The Year for Canceling Debts
1 At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. 2 This is how it
is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel the loan he has made to his
fellow Israelite. He shall not require payment from his fellow Israelite or
brother, because the LORD's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. 3
You may require payment from a foreigner, but you must cancel any debt your
brother owes you. 4 However, there should be no poor among you, for in the
land the LORD your God is giving you to possess as your inheritance, he will
richly bless you, 5 if only you fully obey the LORD your God and are careful
to follow all these commands I am giving you today. 6 For the LORD your God
will bless you as he has promised, and you will lend to many nations but
will borrow from none. You will rule over many nations but none will rule
over you.
7 If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the
land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or
tightfisted toward your poor brother. 8 Rather be openhanded and freely lend
him whatever he needs. 9 Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought: "The
seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near," so that you do not
show ill will toward your needy brother and give him nothing. He may then
appeal to the LORD against you, and you will be found guilty of sin. 10 Give
generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this
the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put
your hand to. 11 There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I
command you to be openhanded toward your brothers and toward the poor and
needy in your land.
Deuteronomy Chapter 16:
18 Appoint judges and officials for each of your tribes in every town the
LORD your God is giving you, and they shall judge the people fairly. 19 Do
not pervert justice or show partiality. Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe
blinds the eyes of the wise and twists the words of the righteous. 20 Follow
justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the
LORD your God is giving you.
Deuteronomy Chapter 24
5 If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any
other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and
bring happiness to the wife he has married.
6 Do not take a pair of millstones-not even the upper one-as security for a
debt, because that would be taking a man's livelihood as security.
7 If a man is caught kidnapping one of his brother Israelites and treats
him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil
from among you.
8 In cases of leprous [a] diseases be very careful to do exactly as the
priests, who are Levites, instruct you. You must follow carefully what I
have commanded them. 9 Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam along
the way after you came out of Egypt.
10 When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not go into his
house to get what he is offering as a pledge. 11 Stay outside and let the
man to whom you are making the loan bring the pledge out to you. 12 If the
man is poor, do not go to sleep with his pledge in your possession. 13
Return his cloak to him by sunset so that he may sleep in it. Then he will
thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the
LORD your God.
14 Do not take advantage of a hired man who is poor and needy, whether he
is a brother Israelite or an alien living in one of your towns. 15 Pay him
his wages each day before sunset, because he is poor and is counting on it.
Otherwise he may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.
16 Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children put
to death for their fathers; each is to die for his own sin.
17 Do not deprive the alien or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak
of the widow as a pledge. 18 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the
LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.
19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not
go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so
that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When
you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second
time. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. 21
When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines
again. Leave what remains for the alien, the fatherless and the widow. 22
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do
this.
