By doing analyses of the rocks returned by the Apollo missions. Story I read was that NASA offered samples to all qualified scientists. They were suprised that no French labs requested samples. The French were miffed that none of their requests were filled. Turned out all French requests had been consolidated, then trashed by an official who felt "French science needs no American samples".
