One thing I like about the short tubed barlows, which is why I got one, 
is that if you put it in the optical train with just itself and the 
eyepiece, you get 2x, but if you put a star diagonal between the Barlow 
and the eyepiece you get 3x.  This little trick also works with imagers 
and film.
