"Invented" is a bit strong, that's why its not considered a standard. But
the Mathematical community is well aware that Archimedes used the exhaustive
method to calculate areas under curves (such as f(x)=x^2) which otherwise
would be very difficult.

In fact, his exhaustive method is almost identical to the way modern
Calculus processes the antiderivative of x^2 using upper and lower sums. In
a sense he was the "forefather" of Calculus.
