The migration may have been substantially smaller than the population
of central Britain. If the native men were driven off their farms and
forced into a subsistence existance or slavery, the invaders would have
been the only successful breeders. MtDNA evidence shows that there was
no corresponding replacement of the female genome, so the women didn't
get replaced. There was also probably a population collapse due to the
cultural disruption, so the invaders could have been only 10% of the
male population and still produced the observed results.
That's still a pretty big migration. Lots of boats.
