Are you sure you are presenting correct information? Nothing in
that preface (not "pretext", which means "svepskäl") says that
volume 4 of the edited journals contains the lost manuscript of
volume 4 of the book.

If it had, the editors would have noticed and said "Good news!
The manuscript of Kalm's planned volume 4 is not lost after all!
Here it is!"

(And I can find no record of a dissertation in Latin by
Strahlenberg either.)
