I believe you have the command wrong.  It's been awhile since I did this
but Im pretty sure the proper command to extend a volume is this :

lvextend -L +12G /dev/<rest of logical volume path>

lvextend -L12G <physical volume)   definitely won't work, but lvextend
-L +12G  <physical volume path> 
may work
