FWIW I'm writing this text inside a windows application compiled with
Qt-4.5.2, and the Ê character in the subject line (a vanilla QLineEdit) is
correctly shown.
Also if I copy-paste the IPA characters mentioned upthread from a
QPlainTextEdit or a QWebView into a QLineEdit, no apparent problem occurs.
