After looking into the excellent Qt docs (*hint* *hint*) for about 30 
seconds I've found this valuable information (QTextCodec):

  ${QTDIR}/doc/html/qtextcodec.html

Search for "Creating your own Codec class" and you'll hopefully find 
"Everything you need(tm)".
