JHM:
Is it ever legitimate for a thread which displays as if expanded
to contain any intermediate items which actually are a collapsed group?
FV:
I don't think it is. This is a known bug in Opera (bug 157676)
which I filed some two years ago.
The bug reporting system seems to expect to be given something
which any tester can reproduce at will, but in this case,
it occurs somewhat unpredictably
Hoping that we're still talking about the same issue, having an expanded
thread containing individual items which are in themselves collapsed
containers for further child messages is quite predictably reproducible:
- Make sure a thread is expanded;
- Make sure a new message in the thread comes in.
Opera now 'forgets' to update the already expanded thread in a correct
way, instead only 'updating' the individual message node which gets a
response. Correct action is rebuilding the entire thread whenever a
response is received.
You can test this most predictably by responding to a message in an
expanded thread yourself and pressing F5 (refresh / fetch new messages)
after that.
This also occurs when you leave opera with a mail/news view with expanded
threads, and fetch new messages a day later.
