While viewing a received message, right click on a toolbar, select
customize.  On the toolbars panel ensure the "show hidden toolbars
while customizing" is checked.

Click on the small blank toolbar above the mail menu (Delete, Compose,
etc.).  Click on the buttons tab, and then defaults.  Drag the newsgroup
status button back to that bar.  Note that the bar will not be visible
if it's empty, and your in compose.  You have to be viewing a received
message.
