I wouldn't agree; one might want to open more than one message
at a time from some view, and this shouldn't be made difficult.

You can of course shift-click in the mail panel to force a new tab.

Yes, since I sometimes want a new tab and sometimes don't, the status quo works best. If its the other way around, there's no way to "unshift" a click for a mail view. (There is for web pages, and I couldn't live without new pages there).
