i don't need any security settings as far as i know. the helppage
doesn't mention anything, and thunderbird is configured without ssl or
tsl.
This implies either the IP address is incorrect, the routing for this IP
address is wrong, or there is no POP3 server on this machine at the
standard port.
The fact that thunderbird connects implies that the DNS and routing is
correct, or that it is doing something odd.
Check the output of netstat while thunderbird is fetcing mail - it should
show a conection to 151.189.21.113:110
