I've got the server set not to queue the messages in the Outbox.
This morning, after a clean boot, the mail sent out without any

I'm not sure which version you're running, but I've notice with several
recent versions that often, after a failed send/receive attempt, it may be
as much as 5 minutes before M2 will actually perform the authentication
procedures. It seems to have all the appearances of checking, but it
doesn't seem to actually go through the process. The give-away here seems
to be the speed with which it goes through its authentication...if it is
real fast, then I know to wait a while before rechecking. It's more
pronounced when you're on a dialup, as I usually am. :-(
