I just tried VLC for the first time and it handled a sports video much
better than Media Player Classic did. VLC does have variable speed and,
as I recall, reversible playback, but you have to look under hotkeys
(Prefs) to find and set them. That page of settings isn't printable and
generally I find this not to be a user-friendly app, given what's out
there.  I'll try BSPlayer.
