This goes back to the days of telex or teletype machines; some e-mail and 
newsgroup programs can even interpret these conventions appropriately:

Put a slash before and after a word to make it /italic/

Put an underline before and after a word to _underline_ it

Put an asterisk before and after a word to indicate *bold*.
