i never display the trash view (why would I?), i simply right click in
the mail side panel and select Empty trash.
just did a little experiment: to empty 1400 posts took 3m 40s.
that wouldn't be so bad but UI becomes almost totally unresponsive
which is my real complaint here.
and clicking on links or opening new tabs in turn slows down the emptying 
process.

i realize when filling up the trash bin you simply mark the posts as to be 
deleted in the future which takes no time at all (thus making it very easy 
untrash an item) and emptying does the actual deletion. but i think the 
deletion process should be at a much lower priority that doesnt interfere
with surfing.

some newsfeeds i like to keep all the posts for reference (ie slashdot feed 
has 3500 posts - almost a years worth) but others i like to empty now and 
then (ie cheap stingy bastard and my netflix queue). it would be nice not 
to have stop what i'm doing while i purge them.
