I use this feature all the time, and many of those times are because XP has forgotten my previous choices, and decided that I probably did want to see that icon after all. Funnily enough, the changes that XP inflicts on me are all from "Always hide" to "Hide when inactive". When I suggested that this was a bug I was told that those icon selections are "preferrences", not "choices".
