Thank you Rijk.  I simply don't know despite a fair amount of reading in
an attempt to help myself.  This strange and very odd behavior did not
occur with the previous v8.5. I will compile a short list of the
websites where this appears to manifest itself causing the slow downs.

Why do you think that is happening? Opera will only try to open a secure
connection when visiting https addresses.
