But I figured this "feature" out. I'd set my user account (in XP) to recognize Opera as my email client. And had been launching it via a shortcut in the Start menu, that specified it as Email. So-o... I pinned the desktop shortcut (...yeah, I know: but I usually have them hidden...) and pinned that to the Start menu, too. And launching Opera via it lets Opera behave normally. (I wish I could say such a misunderstanding will never happen again. But I know better: <http://my.opera.com/community/forums/topic.dml?id=248973> from long eXPerience.
