Hello folks,
I can't figure out how to use the Preferences/Advanced/MIME dialog to
change the
click action to something other than "Open in Opera" or "Save to Disk"
on Vista.
For example, sometimes I want to use one of the other two options for
JPEG images,
but they never work. The desired application opens but without loading
the image.
I've tried several image applications including Windows Photo Gallery,
and they all
open with no content. The default image application path is picked up
automatically
by Opera and is correctly shown in the dialog. The images do load in
the designated
app by clicking on the file name in Windows Explorer.
Another example is that text files fail to open when Notepad is chosen
from the
Preferences/Advanced/MIME dialog for "text/plain", txt extension. On
clicking a link
to a .txt file, an empty Notepad window appears, overlaid by this error
message:
---------------------------
Notepad
The system cannot find the path specified.
OK
---------------------------
But in all cases, a Save Content As on the text file link works as
expected.
If I restore Opera as the default application for text files in the
download dialog,
set the "remember this" check box, and click OK, all hell breaks loose.
Opera goes
into a loop, opening about forty empty tabs, none of which displays the
text file.
A similar Notepad error displays if I set it as the default page source
viewer:
---------------------------
Notepad
---------------------------
Cannot find the C:\Program Files\Opera\profile\cache4\opr000FM.txt file.
Do you want to create a new file?
Yes No Cancel
---------------------------
Perhaps the problem is that the target file is actually in
C:\Users\DM\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program
Files\Opera\profile\cache4\.
It's odd that Opera continues to use the \VirtualStore folder, which (as
I understand
it) was intended only for compatibility with pre-Vista applications.
Even so, if
other Opera functions can find files in \VirtualStore, View Source and
Open Image
should be able to do so as well. Is there a trick to make this work?
No Virtual store is to FORCE the storage of USER data in user specific
folders - required because many application developers haven't bothered to
do it.
There is a simple fix.
1) Uninstall Opera
2) Install Opera and select multi-user profiles.
IF you really NEED multiple users using the same profile then instead of
the above
1) Uninstall Opera.
2) Install Opera but change the install path to not be under C:\Program
Files
I see this behavior in 9.5x, and 9.6 (10421). I found nothing on these
issues in
Opera help or support. Is there a page somewhere with specific MIME
setup details
for Vista? I'm running Vista Home Basic, SP1, fully patched, with UAC
on.
