I got the same bug once it was fixed in a weekly and it works fine for me.  
The server was motzarella.org, check out the desktop team blog  
http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog and find the weekly that says fixed  
problems with authentication with newsgroups servers, thats when my  
problem got fixed.
