Not exactly what you describe, but try this anyway:
opera:config#UserPrefs|UseThumbnailsinWindowCycle = 1
Yeah I know but that interface isn't that intuitive either. It's not
entirely clear that the selected page in the list corresponds to the
middle image on the right side.
The page title needs to be closer to its thumbnail (ie. on top or
underneath) and a box drawn around the pair. The only way I can think
of to get that to work is to tile them. Of course, something needs to
be done if there are too many thumbnails to fit in one screen. Perhaps
scrolling could manage this, or shrinking.
If you want 'quick tabs', why not press Shift+F6? :)
