Running the actual defragment in SAFE mode is a good idea. The results will
be cleaner with fewer stuff running.

All virus and spyware scanners installed on the laptop (Norton Antivirus,
Acronis antispyware, Microsoft antispyware, HiJackThis) show a malware-free
environment.
It hasn't reoccurred since the Perfect Disk 7.0 defragment of the pagefile
so I am assuming that it is related to disk access collisions of applications
at busy startup time. This is similar to a problem I had previously where
Windows would boot up into a completely new home directory as if it couldn't
find the login user directory.
